A VW 2.5 engine, all-motor build, 9400 rpm. The video details explain. Aparently making all-motor power is a hard thing to do. No kidding, but the noise it makes is wonderful to a point. After 8,000+, it gets a bit...standard? Is that a good word? It’s the first thing that comes to mind.

The 2.5 was pretty roundly criticized by automotive journalists, but I love it. I love getting on the gas in our Jetta and listening to it sing.

I had a 2.5 Mark V Wolfsburg and I thought it was just enough. I think it had a useable powerband and certainly more pickup than an FRS. Its 5 sounded almost as good as the one in my Audi with a K&N pop charger. Nothing beats that extra chorus member, it is surprisingly appealing.

Just when you sell awesome turbo direct injected 4 cyls, an awesome turbo 5cyl, a narrow angle V6 and a Tubodeisel that was supposed to be magic and not require urea injection...an understressed NA 5 may as well be invisible esp to autojourno’s spoiled by BMW turbocharging everything.

I reeeeeally want to put this in an Audi 4000 and give it ITBs. Then go hillclimbing.

The big complaint was “power like a four, thirsty like a six” but I actually felt like it was a pretty nice compromise, especially considering it ran on 87 octane while most of the rest of the fleet wanted 91+ or diesel.

Does anyone on here have any firsthand experience with the IE products for the 2.5?

Myself and a buddy at 034 Motorsport have been plotting to build a similar engine for my 4000 for years now. Use a 2.5L Eurovan block with a diesel crank, a 7A head and VW 16V hotrod valvetrain parts and pistons, and spin it up. Glad to see someone do it!

Impressive that they got a 5 cylinder to 9400, but the torque & power curves are pretty sad. 5500 just to hit 200hp, then torque falling off so fast from 7500-9400 that they don’t gain anything...thing about how much work it took to get the last 2000 rpm, for no return. Meanwhile the turbo 2.5 in the RS3 has an extra hundred horsepower, and torque from around 1500.

True, but what i liked was the 280hp over the last 2 000 rpm. All up top. 9400 goves serious mechanical advantage, its how the NSX out 60’d more powerful cars....but, you are very right...its kinda sad. Only 280hp from 2.5....honda did that hp/liter in a production engine.
